Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

Three local or state organizations or communities of practice that appealed to me:

1.    North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children- The association advocates for young children in multiple ways across the state. I believe that this association is a very resourceful tool. Through membership, I will be able to share and gain knowledge with others who also share a passion for early childhood education.
2.    Child Care Services Association-This association provides different resources for families and other early childhood professions. They also host trainings that relate to issues within the field. I believe that this association we allow me to take courses to better my skills and interactions with my staff.
3.    Be a voice for our youth (Facebook group)- This community of practice is a group of individuals we advocate for children. Members of this group are fellow classmates of North Carolina Central University. In this group, we pose questions, discuss our personal experiences, as well as posting worldwide news related articles.

Job opportunities that interest me:

1.    NC Certified Early Childhood Education Trainer- Hosting different trainings for individuals.
2.    Quality Enhancement Specialist/ Technical Assistance- providing support for teachers in a classroom environment. Using different resources to ensure early childhood programs are following state rules and regulations.

Skills and experience that you would need to competently fulfill each of these roles

To be successful in these roles, I believe that one must be a continuous learner. Having this mentality will help you to stay current with updates and changes within the field. To be a trainer, it is important to have strong communication skills. Both of the job opportunities are in the field of ECE. Therefore, a person should have experience in the field. Their knowledge and background would be a key factor to fulfill these roles.

  1. Hi Kiara,

I wanted to learn more about the first site you posted, the North Carolina Association for Education of Young Children. It was neat to learn they are affiliated with NAEYC. The job links was loaded with jobs all around North Carolina. Before this assignment, I never would have thought to look on sites such as the ones you and I chose to find jobs. I feel better knowing there are so many jobs all around the United States. I am also shocked by the variety of jobs I could be considered for that I would not have considered. One thing is for sure, like you said, we need to be willing to be a continuous learner. That will take our opportunities even further.

  2. Kiara,

Thank you for including a community of practice that I am sure many of us are a part of in some form but do not think of it as being a true asset to our professional growth as well as the impact it can have on a community. I am part of a few different groups like the one you highlighted but I did not make the connection until reading your post.

I am always inspired when an employer will assist the employee with further his/her education and development as a professional. Learning should never stop so by being a part of an organization that will facility these opportunities I think it is a great investment. I know if I were part of an organization such as Child Care Services Association I would feel more connected as the group has invested in me thus aiding me in the decision to be a part of the organization longer.

Thank you for sharing these organizations/groups. I lived in North Carolina for three years and had not heard of the one of these which I could have used to grow more professionally while living there.
