Released on January 31st, UNICEF stated that 3 out of 10 children between the ages of 10 and 15 are in conflict or disaster stricken countries are illiterate. As an educator, this information was very shocking. Relating back to our last week's topic on poverty, these numbers clearly show how this issue greatly impacts education. Executive Director Fore, states that children who grow up in a country that is affected or destroyed by disasters further fall into the category of being illiterate and they most likely do not have a chance to come back from the downfall. Reading this information was heart breaking and unfortunately it is the reality for many children. Organizations such as UNICEF, do a great job with keeping the hope alive for young children in these environment. UNICEF launched a humanitarian appeal for $900 million for education in countries affected by conflicts and natural disasters. The organization also urges other sectors to take action by helping the education crisis (3 in 10 young people,2018).

Kiara Palmer: That news is devastating and thank you for sharing it with us! Groups like UNICEF (and your blog post) are getting the issues out there. How else would we know what is going on in these conflict or disaster stricken countries? The best part about UNICEF (besides the obvious) is that it also educates teachers on children from all over this world and their environment they are coming from. Just imagine getting a new student from one of these countries (or a refugee child) and how much better we will be able assist him/her thanks to the info from UNICEF. Thanks for sharing
